Originally the site of the Uhland homestead, the road was built following the streambed, which ran through land formerly named Uhland Canyon. Beginning in 1932, the Coles began raising turkeys and would open Coles’ Turkey Ranch, seen here, a staple for local families’ Thanksgivings. The Mahr family owned one of the first poultry farms in the San Marcos area. The Mahr poultry farm consisted of 100 acres just south of Discovery Road, purchased in 1914.

This baling crew is in the process of raking hay into piles after it was cut by a horse-drawn mower. Seated in the tractor is chief engineer George Witty, husband of Rosa Lee Borden. Described as “short and feisty,” Witty was blind in one eye but was still allowed to drive a piece of heavy agricultural machinery. 52 Pictured here on the Eliason Ranch, the Nordahl steam engine and threshing rig is in full operation. The threshing machine separated the grain from the husk, then cleaned and stacked the grain.
