The war lasted slightly more than three months and appeared to confirm Mahan's theories about naval power. On May 1 at Manila Bay in the Philippines, Dewey destroyed his opponent and lost just one American life.

The candidate remained at his home in Canton, Ohio, where he spoke to visiting delegations while spokesmen saturated the Midwest with literature. They touted McKinley as "the advance agent of prosperity" and ridiculed Bryan as a country buffoon.
