Grisham draws Eva Miranda no more fully or sympathetically than he does Patrick Lanigan, focusing on facts about her and not on her feelings.

At the start of the novel, Michael Brock is as rigid and self-consciously tight-fisted as Ebenezer Scrooge. During the ensuing four weeks, he learns to empathize with the poor. That said, Dickens’s Scrooge has to work harder than Michael Brock does to achieve transformation.
